NHL Playoffs Update

The NHL playoffs have not lacked in entertainment thus far. Some of these teams have some serious bad blood between them. In my opinion, Los Angeles and Philadelphia have already clinched their series and I’m not sure of anyone saw a sweep coming. The Penguins have played like absolute crap, and you will not win if you’re going to give up 8 goals in games 2 and 3. The Flyers have gotten underneath their skin and have successfully distracted them from the game itself and gotten them more focused on mixing it up after the whistle. A lot of the playoffs are about mind games and the Penguins have put themselves between a rock and a hard place right now.

Red Wings Game 1 Recap and Other Stuff

Holy bad bounces.  They will never be able to beat the Predators, and more specifically Pekka Rinne, if they have to score 4 goals per game.  Losing Darren Helm for the rest of the season with lacerated wrist ligaments is basically the complete opposite of what I wanted to happen to him.  He brings energy to the squad and is invaluable as a penalty killer.  Not to mention the fact that he provided depth for the team.  Right now the truly only positive thing about last night, is that the Red Wings are currently 2 for 8 on the powerplay and they killed off all six of their penalties last night.  Special teams are certainly getting the job done, and exceeding my expectations, but the defense need to play better.  I thought that Brad Stuart had one of his worst games in a while, and with as deep of a blue line as the Wings have, this cannot happen.  The penalties called last night were getting a bit ridiculous, and while it did ruin the flow of the game, that is not why the Wings lost.  They need to get some scoring out of Datsyuk and Franzen, and have their defense play much better if they want to win game 2.

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview-Western Conference & Cup Final

The Western Conference is certainly the less-flashy of the two conferences.  Most of the time the top point-getters are in the East, and the more complete and dominant teams are in the West.  I mean, this year the Central Division has 4 teams with 102+ points, completely absurd.

Stanley Cup Playoff Preview-Eastern Conference

For me there is almost no better time of year.  The Stanley Cup Playoffs are beyond intense, and when there are intriguing match ups like there are this year, life is complete.

The Eastern Conference is always a top-heavy conference and this year is no exception to that trend.  The Rangers, Penguins, Bruins and Flyers are the most dangerous teams in the East right now, and they will all be tough to beat.  Unfortunately for the Penguins and Flyers they have to play each other in round 1, which is certainly the most entertaining matchup right out of the gate.

Leaf Arrested Twice In Four Days; Mikel Leshoure facing Drug Charges

Former Washington State Quarterback Ryan Leaf, who has been forever known as the quarterback drafted after Peyton Manning #2 overall in 1998, was arrested twice in the last four days.  The second arrest came just three days after he posted a $76,000 bond.  Leaf has been in trouble since his NFL career flamed out, and is still serving a 10 year probation in the state of Texas for similar crimes (Espn.com).  The two arrests were both because he burglarized a home and stole prescription drugs.  It is clear that he has not been able to control his addiction to the pain killers despite undergoing treatment.

It’s clear that this guy is a complete moron, but when you have a disease and have to feed an addiction, you’ll do whatever it takes to get what you want.  And I mean I get it.  You lose in the Heisman race to Charles Woodson, then you lose to Michigan and Charles Woodson in the Rose Bowl, then you get drafted #2 overall where you’re expected to resurrect a franchise, while the guy drafted ahead of you works his way to becoming a Hall of Fame quarterback.  I’m not making excuses for the guy, but it’s pretty obvious why he would want the pain killers.  He’s one of the biggest busts in NFL history and will always be seen that way.

Nike Sues Reebok Over Selling Jets Tebow Jerseys

As I’m sure everyone has heard, Tim Tebow was traded to the New York Jets last week.  The reason for this lawsuit is that Nike believes that they have lost the ability to capitalize on a unique business opportunity.  Meaning they want to get all the profits from Tebow’s massive amounts of followers buying his new jersey.  A player like Tebow will have fans that flock to whichever team that he plays for and will want his jersey as soon as it is available to them.  This also means that the Jets are not likely altering their jerseys in any way for the upcoming season.  Reebok is selling jerseys at a huge discount to get rid of their stockpiles, and if Nike decided to sue Reebok over the new Tebow jerseys they can’t be that different.  Who would want to pay $120 for a Nike Tebow jersey over $80 for a Reebok Tebow jersey? Enter lawsuit.

The NFL Catches Everyone

This blog seems to be turning more into a football blog right now, but I guess that is mainly because there’s not much to talk about in the way of hockey.  The Wings finally ended their losing streak last night, and Michigan Hockey had a rough outing against Cornell on Friday.  With the trade deadline come and gone and only another week of the season left, controversy and news is limited.  The only real news worth mentioning is that Alexander Radulov got a ridiculous waiver that if he left the KHL and rejoined the Predators, because he is still under contract in Nashville, he wouldn’t have to clear the NHL waiver wire.  Keep in mind he has been in the KHL the last four years, and adding him to the Predators is bad for everyone in the Western Conference.  I’m just hoping that he plays like Hudler did the first time he came back to the NHL from the KHL.

NFL News of The Day

Now that we’re back from Nationals I can go back to attempting to regularly update this blog.  Interestingly enough, the Crestwood Suites wouldn’t let me get on the internet and so I have been off the grid for a while.

Nationals Jackie, Nationals. For All These People.

The club hockey team’s week-long trip to Fort Myers starts tomorrow, and I’m still in the process of packing….which obviously is why I felt this was the best time to write a new blog post.

Obviously the biggest news of the day was Calvin Johnson’s new contract for 8 years $132 Million with $60 Million guaranteed.  It gets his salary cap hit down for this next year and most importantly keeps Calvin Johnson in a Detroit Lions uniform.  Free Agency for the Lions has gone quite slowly otherwise, with Eric Wright signing with Tampa Bay and the Lions have only scheduled visits for potential players.  Some players coming in include, offensive tackle Eric Winston, offensive tackle Marcus McNeill, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, strong safety LaRon Landry, cornerback Jacob Lacey, wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr and linebacker David Hawthorne.
